The idea also had to become a working company.

Howard Pearlmutter founded and led Softweaver from 1981 to 1994. His responsibilities included recruiting, software leadership, clients, sales, finance, payroll, forecasting, and product development.

Apple, CBS, Disney, Epson, Xerox, and Kodak were among its clients or licensees.

The creative undertaking had an operating life.

Making something useful involved more than invention.

A product needed implementation. A team needed people and direction. A client needed a result. The company needed enough commercial and financial coherence to keep working.

Those responsibilities put different kinds of knowledge into contact.

The experience supplies another dimension to Howard's later advisory and creative work: a practical understanding of what it takes to bring an idea through an organization and into use.

Other ventures developed other combinations.

As chairman of 4SITE from 1986 to 1989, Howard contributed technology architecture, market direction, and business-model work around geographic information and Macintosh integration. Operating responsibilities were delegated; chairmanship was a distinct role from running Softweaver.

He later became a founding advisory-board member and early investor in TerraCycle, contributing to product and financing strategy.

These were different companies and contributions. Together they show creative work meeting technology, markets, organization, and ecology.

Let the business question participate early enough.

Who might find the idea useful? What would make it practical to provide? Which part needs a first experiment, and which part requires an operating capability?

Those questions can enrich the invention instead of appearing only after it feels complete.

An idea gains another kind of life when people can organize around making it useful.
